Which Meal Kit Provides a Better Service?

1. Ingredients

Plated focuses on high-quality ingredients and seasonal produce, so the produce you get each month will be at its peak of freshness. Your Plated meal kit will include artisan food products that you may not find in the supermarket, along with farm-sourced fish, 100% antibiotic-free meats, and organic produce whenever possible. Ingredients are designed to stay fresh for up to 5 days, excluding seafood, which should be cooked within 2 days of receiving it.

HelloFresh also uses fresh, high-quality ingredients, with the goal of helping customers create a positive cooking experience that will yield healthy food. Chicken, beef and pork are antibiotic and hormone-free. Seafood is wild or farm-raised, and caught according to the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch program standards.

HelloFresh ingredients

WINNER: HelloFresh

While both Plated and HelloFresh offer premium, seasonal ingredients, we like that HelloFresh encourages customers to incorporate more fruits and veggies into their meals.

2. Value for Money

Plated is more expensive than HelloFresh, though both offer significant discounts for first-time customers. HelloFresh’s Family Plan offers more value for your money, though both companies have similar pricing on the Classic Plan.

Plated only offers free shipping only on orders over $60 while most HelloFresh meal plans come with free shipping.

WINNER: HelloFresh

While HelloFresh isn’t that much cheaper than Plated, its slightly lower cost combined with free shipping on almost all orders gives you more value for your money.

3. Meal Selection and Recipe Difficulty

When choosing a meal delivery service, it’s all about the recipes. If the recipes aren’t to your taste, it doesn’t matter if the ingredients are super fresh or the cost is super low — you won’t enjoy the final product.

In order to bring you delicious recipe options, Plated offers a chef-designed menu and HelloFresh offers chef-curated recipes. Both menus include classics like meatballs, steak and chicken wraps. In addition, each company includes recipes that are a bit different like Plated’s Harissa Eggplant Bowls and HelloFresh’s Vietnamese-style Bánh MÌ Burgers. You can also find interesting spins on classic dishes like Plated’s Beef and Grape Tomato Ragu over Summer Squash Noodles.

In terms of recipe preparation, both sites have recipes with varying levels of difficulty, so you can choose whichever level you feel comfortable with.

WINNER: Plated

Plated offers 20 recipes to choose from each week, whereas HelloFresh offers 15. Plus, with Plated, you can order dessert. Dessert always wins.

4. Environmental Impact

Getting food delivered to your house every week means a whole lot of boxes and packaging. Both Plated and HelloFresh use packaging and materials that can be recycled, including insulating liners, ice packs, and the boxes themselves.

When it comes to sourcing ingredients, Plated uses 100% antibiotic-free meats, beef with no added hormones, and seasonal, local produce. HelloFresh also works with trusted business partners to provide farm-sourced, fresh produce and hormone-free poultry and pork.

WINNER: Plated

Plated and HelloFresh are nearly identical when it comes to packaging recyclability and food-sourcing. However, Plated has fulfillment centers across the country that donate leftover perishable ingredients to food banks, not only doing a good deed but helping to eliminate waste as well.

5. Flexibility

If you go out of town or your plans change last minute, it’s important to be able to modify your food delivery subscription without too much hassle. Plated allows you to skip and unskip weeks with no charge for the weeks you skip. You’ll need to make the adjustments on the website or app by noon, 6 days before the scheduled delivery.

Plated delivery

HelloFresh offers the same service, but the cutoff time for skipping is 11: 59 pm PST 5 days prior to delivery. Both companies also allow you to switch plans at any time and cancel at any time (whichever you do, the same cutoff times apply).

WINNER: HelloFresh

Both Plated and HelloFresh offer the same level of flexibility in terms of skipping weeks, switching between subscriptions, and cancellations. HelloFresh takes this one, though, since it allows you to cancel 5 days before delivery, as opposed to Plated’s 6-day policy.

Which Meal Kit Service Takes the Cake?

Plated and HelloFresh offer similar services when it comes to flexibility, pricing and environmental impact. If you’re looking for variety, Plated is your winner, with 20 recipes to choose from each week, while HelloFresh is the better choice if you want to brighten your meals with lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Whichever service you choose, your decision is sure to prove delicious.
