Freshness may vary depending on how…
Freshness may vary depending on how soon you use each dinner. I like to order four meals at a time, but the produce for those last two meals don't always look so great. Also, some meals require a LOT more seasoning -- how would we know until it's too late? I'll tell you what I do like, however. We are 78 and retired and lately, it is too much of a hassle to figure out "what's for dinner", night after night after night. OMG, and then making a list and shopping for all the components. What a nightmare. Going to restaurants is an option, but that's not the healthiest way to go. And "menu fatigue" is a bigger problem than you might imagine. So. Marley Spoon lets me know what's for dinner. I do my choosing all at once about once a month. I can check out the nutritional elements of each meal making sure protein is greater than fats, and that enough vegetables are involved. It's actually quite fun since so many options are offered. We usually try different meals each time, so it seldom gets boring. Like eating at a new restaurant, we never know how the meal really is until it's on the table. I like that. We work together on preparation. My husband chops and slices and I put everything together. It's a good mental exercise, frankly, like doing a crossword puzzle. I have a few issues with the instructions, frankly. They are linear rather than columnar which means you may not realize that you need to chop parley until you are ready to serve. For years, I have tried all the available meal kits and there is a certain efficiency in knowing up front what to chop or slice. Especially if your "chopper" has a hard time reading or interpreting instructions.😉 Finally, the meals are often fabulously delicious. Not always, but we remind ourselves that in a restaurant, it would be the same. The meals are often pretty healthy, as well. At our age, this is particularly important. A word about price: sometimes I have tried to prepare one of these meals on my own from the recipe card. My grocery bill is certainly no less -- usually more --and I end up with a bunch of jars and bottles hanging around my cupboards and refrigerator door that just age and take up space till they turn green and fuzzy. I figure each dinner for two runs about $25 which includes a modest tip for our wonderful delivery guy. That's a lot less than a restaurant, without the hassle of getting dressed, plus we get a free mental acuity workout. Bottom line, I would be heartbroken if Marley Spoon went away or for some reason, I could not order it any more.

Overview

Martha & Marley Spoon wants to make healthy cooking at home easy and delicious with their simple 5-step ordering process.

First, choose how many people you’re serving (2 or 4) and how many meals you want each week (2 – 6). At this stage, you can select to only view vegetarian recipes. After providing your zip code and email, your delivery details and payment information, you finally get to the fun part: choosing your meals!

Does Martha & Marley Spoon Come With Instructions?

Each recipe is developed by professional chefs and nutritionists, but you wouldn’t know it by how easy the directions are to follow. Each recipe is carefully crafted to have six (or fewer) steps, which removes a huge barrier with making some of the more complex recipes. These steps are also paired with images to guide your cooking. If you’re looking for simpler recipes and quick cook times, you can opt for the sub-30 minute menu.

On the recipe cards, there are details for what additional ingredients you’ll need in your kitchen beforehand; vinegar, flour, oil, salt, pepper, and sugar are common ones. You can also find information about nutrition, allergens, and needed cookware.

Martha & Marley Spoon Meal Plans

If you’re a fan of Martha Stewart’s cooking, Martha & Marley Spoon will make you feel like a kid in a candy store. Straight from her cookbooks, you get to choose from more than 40 colorful signature recipes each week. Meals are divided into 5 different menus: Health & Diet, Vegetarian & Vegan, Meat & Fish, Under 30 Minutes, and Family-Friendly.

Martha & Marley Spoon Dietary Options and Programs

Information concerning dietary restrictions and allergens is available with each individual recipe. Dietary preferences and restrictions are labeled to make the selection process easier, but there is no listing of all diet-friendly recipes available — you must go through recipes one-by-one.

Out of the 40 weekly options, only about half caters to gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegetarian diets. For people with dietary restrictions, the options are fairly limited.

Specialty diets include no added gluten, no added dairy, vegetarian, low-calorie, low-carb, keto-friendly, and nutritious (aka minimally processed). Low calorie dishes have less than 650 calories per serving. Dishes labeled “low carb” have 40 grams of carbs per serving or less, which is great for people trying to control their blood sugar.

The keto label includes only the meals with less than 20 grams of carbs per serving — that’s low enough to put some people into the metabolic state of ketosis, but isn’t low enough for everyone.

Our Favorite Marthey & Marley Spoon Meals

The lemon-brown butter salmon and cauliflower rice is a crowd-pleaser in the Health & Diet category — bonus that it also fits in the sub-30 minute menu. An exemplary of the vegan/vegetarian menu is the vegan braised white beans on ciabatta with rosemary-chili oil and greens.

French onion beef stroganoff over egg noodles is spot on for the meat and fish menu. The most-loved family-friendly recipe is the pan-roasted chicken with gravy and mashed potatoes.

How Martha & Marley Spoon Works

Placing an Order with Martha & Marley Spoon

After providing your zip code and email (step 2), providing delivery details and selecting a delivery date (step 3), and payment information (step 4), you finally get to the fun part: choosing your meals!

Each recipe is developed by professional chefs and nutritionists, but you wouldn’t know it with how easy the directions are to follow. Recipes change weekly, and you can look to see what is available up to a month in advance.

Meals available from Martha and Marley are divided into 5 different plans: Health & Diet, Vegetarian & Vegan, Meat & Fish, Under 30 Minutes, and Family-Friendly. Every week offers a total of 40 different recipes that are available from these menus. Recipes change weekly, and you can look to see what is available up to a month in advance.

How to Choose Meals from Martha & Marley Spoon

Recipes are labeled with descriptors for choosing meals including: one-pot meals, type of protein (e.g., fish), spicy, optional spice, special, kid-friendly, and healthy. With such helpful labeling, you will have no issue selecting the menu items right for you!

If you have a special diet, recipes are tagged with notes like keto-friendly, no gluten added, and low-calorie. Dietary preferences and restrictions are labeled to make choosing for special diets easier, but there is no listing of all diet-friendly recipes available — you must go through recipes one-by-one. You’ll also notice at this step what additional ingredients you’ll need on hand; vinegar, flour, oil, salt, pepper, and sugar are common ones.

Each recipe is carefully crafted to have 6 (or fewer) steps, which removes a huge barrier with making some of the more complex recipes. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for efficiency, you can opt to choose only from a sub-30 minute menu. With beautiful photos and recipe descriptions to make your mouth water, try not to let choosing your meals take up all the time you’re supposed to be saving!

Martha & Marley Spoon vs HelloFresh

Martha & Marley Spoon and HelloFresh are similar in as much as they both deliver meals to your door, and that’s about where the resemblance stops. HelloFresh is known for delivering easily prepared meal kits — plus completely pre-made meals — for an inexpensive price. Martha & Marley Spoon, on the other hand, put a central focus on the culinary experience with high-quality ingredients, bold flavor combinations, and advanced cooking techniques. There’s little to compare since the target audience of each is so different.

Martha & Marley Spoon vs Home Chef

Martha & Marley Spoon and Home Chef share with each other an emphasis on making chef-caliber meals available to any home cook, no matter their time or skills. Home Chef strikes a good balance between affordability and quality, and provides dozens of options that satisfy quite a few dietary restrictions to boot. Martha & Marley Spoon moves their needle towards higher quality, more advanced flavors, and techniques, and premium prices, but delivers on fewer dietary restrictions and isn’t customizable like Home Chef.

Martha & Marley Spoon vs Sunbasket

Sunbasket and Martha & Marley Spoon put quality at the top of their priorities. Sunbasket uses a fully organic menu of produce-forward meals; they make eating healthy whole foods easy and delicious. Martha & Marley Spoon pairs technique with striking combinations to bring out the flavors of their high-quality ingredients. With both being quite tasty, the takeaway is that Sunbasket wins in the convenience department (especially with their heat-and-eat line of meals), but Martha & Marley Spoon takes the lead when it comes to satisfying the inner chef in each of us.

Bottom Line

Martha & Marley Spoon is one of the best choices for people who love cooking but who just don’t have the time to quench their thirst for high-caliber home cooked meals. It may be in the more expensive tier of meal delivery kits, and it may require more time and technique to put together, but the exceptional flavors and high quality of Martha & Marley Spoon will keep us coming back to these recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Martha & Marley Spoon keto-friendly?+-

Martha & Marley Spoon has two lines of meals lower in carbohydrates. Although their low carb options aren’t suitable for someone on a ketogenic diet, their “keto-friendly” meals may be low enough in net carbohydrates to constitute as legitimately ketogenic. To make these ‘keto-friendly' meals work for a very low carbohydrate diet, choose the meals with the lowest total carbs, the highest levels of fiber and fat, and consider adding a tablespoon of oil to up the fat content. Without paying attention to these you might be thinking you’re in ketosis, without actually getting any of the metabolic benefits!

Is Martha & Marley Spoon healthy?+-

With their emphasis on fresh, minimally processed ingredients, Martha & Marley Spoon wins some points for healthfulness with any of their recipes. Taking a closer look, though, you can find plenty of meals that are high in calories, rich with fats, high in sodium, or have hidden preservatives and added sugar. None of these alone are enough to warrant an “unhealthy” label, but be sure to check the nutrition label when you’re deciding on meals. Martha & Marley Spoon is delicious, but may be best in moderation for people paying attention to their metabolic health.

Can you lose weight on Martha & Marley Spoon?+-

Yes, with multiple options. Meals with the “Nutritious” label feature minimally processed ingredients with high-fiber vegetables, less processed grains, and lean proteins — the perfect combination for healthy, sustainable weight loss. Their low calorie meals have 650 calories or less. Their low carb meals have 40 grams or fewer total carbs, and their keto-friendly meals are 20 grams carbs or less — which may help some people lose weight. Lastly, the vegetarian options could be another good option for someone wanting metabolic health and regulated weight. Just read the nutrition information — some Martha & Marley Spoon meals are more loaded than others!
