Ultra Home Internet Review 2022

Serguei Solokhine author image

In a Nutshell

Ultra Home Internet is an internet provider that operates in every state except Alaska and has the largest 5G network in the United States. We were impressed with its affordable rates and the ease of installation of its NETGEAR Orbi router. The routers are pricey, but 24-month financing starting at 0% APR is available. Overall, Ultra Home Internet’s 5G service is fast, affordable, and should be easily accessible for most Americans.

What Services and Features Does Ultra Home Internet Offer?

Ultra Home Internet offers 5G home internet in most locations and 4G LTE home internet in areas where 5G is unavailable. Users benefit from high speeds, no annual contracts, and easy installation. Ultra has the largest amount of total 5G coverage of any provider in the US, at around 50%.

In terms of speed, Ultra Home Internet offers users a maximum advertised speed of 115Mbps. This speed is available to all users, regardless of what plan they are using. In practice, 5G connections will perform better than 4G connections because they run on newer technology.

All plans are contract-free, and users can opt out at any time by calling customer service. That said, all Ultra Home Internet plans require the purchase of a NETGEAR Orbi Gateway router, which will be mailed to you on sign-up. If you purchase through financing, you will be effectively committed until you can pay off the router—up to 24 months.

However, you can return your router within the first 15 days to receive a full refund of your purchase, minus a 15% restocking fee. To do so, contact Ultra Home Internet’s customer service within 15 days of receiving your router in the mail, and they will provide detailed return instructions. Note that the router must be returned in the original packaging in like-new condition, with no visible damage.

The router also comes with a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty covering electrical and manufacturing defects. Return a defective Gateway in good physical condition with no scratches, cracks, or liquid damage to be eligible for repair or replacement.

Prices, Plans, and Value for Money

At $54.99 per month, Ultra Home Internet’s pricing is on the low end for 5G coverage. 5G starter plans can range anywhere from $50 to $70 monthly. All of Ultra Home Internet’s plans offer their fastest internet speed and their very best signal strength and uptime. The only difference between the plans is how much monthly data you want to use.

Ultra Home Internet does not offer an unlimited data plan and doesn’t offer the high-end, higher-speed tiers of some competing internet providers. That said, these competitors mainly provide services in dense urban centers. For many customers outside these areas, and for those who are looking for max affordability, Ultra Home Internet will be their best option for 5G coverage.

Ease of Use, Hardware, and Setup

Ultra Home Internet is very easy to set up and use. To begin, navigate to their website and click Check availability on the home page. Enter your home address to determine if Ultra Home Internet is available in your area. If it is, you should see a plan selection screen.

Once you decide on a plan, call 1-888-530-2476 and speak to a representative. The rep will confirm if 5G is available in your area and set up an account for you. They will also confirm your mailing address, to send you a NETGEAR Orbi Gateway.

The Orbi is not free with your plan, with the 5G Gateway retailing for $599.99 and the 4G gateway retailing for $289.99. You can purchase the router outright, or get financing through Affirm, with payments as low as $24.99/mo for the 5G device and $12.08/mo for the 4G, starting at 0% APR.

Once you receive your Orbi device in the mail, installation is very straightforward. Simply download and install the Orbi App and follow the instructions. You will create a username and password to access your router and WiFi network. For the 5G network, your Orbi will then scan for nearby 5G towers and connect. For 4G, you will need to connect it to the internet with a standard ethernet cable.

Ultra Home Internet Security

Ultra Home Internet does not come with any built-in security features. We strongly recommend that you protect your browsing activity with a firewall and a strong password.

Ultra Home Internet Performance

Individual internet speeds can vary widely. 5G router users should expect higher speeds than 4G LTE users. Ultra Home Internet lists a top internet speed of 115Mbps, though users reported download speeds between 43-143Mbps for 5G and 19-76Mbps for 4G. Expected speeds for 5G devices were around 100Mbps, which is about standard for the industry and comparable to similar plans by AT&T.

Some competitors, like Verizon, do offer higher-speed services (at higher price points), but their availability is more limited. Overall, we were impressed with Ultra Home Internet’s performance and availability.

Ultra Home Internet Customer Service

You can contact Ultra Home Internet’s care team at 1-844-718-0495 from 8 am-5 pm CST, Monday to Friday, for any service inquiries.

What is Ultra Home Internet?

Ultra Home Internet is a US-based 5G high-speed internet provider. It uses T-Mobile’s infrastructure, which makes it the second-largest home internet provider by coverage area in the United States, and the largest 5G provider. For many customers, Ultra Home Internet is the only 5G provider available in their local area.

How much does 5G internet cost?

5G internet pricing varies greatly by plan, with basic plans starting from $50-$70/month, depending on the provider.

How does 5G home internet work?

5G is a fixed wireless connection. When you purchase a plan from a 5G internet provider, like Ultra Home Internet, you receive a router in the mail. This router connects wirelessly to the nearest 5G tower, beaming high-speed internet directly to your home. You can then connect to your router’s home WiFi network with your devices and browse the internet.

Bottom Line

Ultra Home Internet offers fast, affordable 5G connectivity in every US state except Alaska. For many Americans, it is currently the only option for 5G connectivity. You can choose from 5 different plans, each identical except for the monthly data usage limit.

Ultra Home Internet’s service can only be accessed with a NETGEAR Orbi Gateway, which is available for purchase with 24-month financing options through Affirm available starting at 0% APR.

Note that in certain areas, especially dense urban centers, other providers offering unlimited data use and higher speeds are available. That said, Ultra Home Internet beats them on price. If you are looking for an affordable provider or a 5G provider in a rural part of the US, Ultra Home Internet is likely your best option.
