What’s Unique About Hungryroot?

Hungryroot is a healthy grocery delivery solution. It delivers everything you need to eat right. Hungryroot also has a ton of variety both in terms of flavors and specialty diets. You can get everything from classic American ham and cheese sandwiches to traditional Chile lime chicken and tacos. In terms of specialty diets, you can sort recipes by protein (animal or plant-based), vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, shellfish-free, tree nut-free, peanut-free, and egg-free. There’s also a 500 calories or less section. So Hungryroot really covers all the bases.

Hungryroot is also fabulous with customizations. When you create an account, you’ll be asked about your dietary preferences. Those are the options listed above. When you select one, Hungryroot will make sure you don’t receive any items on your exclusion diet. Beyond that, Hungryroot lets you make a food profile. You can tell the company how often you want a specific food (eggs four times a week, chicken two a week, etc.), and you can also specify foods you don’t want to be included in your delivery.

Hungryroot is big on nutrition, as is apparent from the recipe choices available. What’s more, Hungryroot tries to deliver fresh, healthy food items. There are no artificial colors or preservatives or sweeteners, no high-fructose corn syrup, and no partially hydrogenated oils. And to top it all off, all Hungryroot packaging is 100% recyclable. Even the gel inside the ice packs can be used as plant food for your flowers or garden. Well done!

How It Works

Ordering with Hungryroot starts with a quiz. You’ll start out by choosing your free gift. Off to a good start already! Next, you’ll be asked to tell Hungryroot what types of meals you like (choose from a variety of meals pictured on the screen). You’ll also be asked which types of snacks you prefer.

When you complete the quiz, Hungryroot will generate a plan based on your preferences. You can stick with this plan, change it, and add items along the way. I like how flexible the subscriptions are. Hungryroot lets you select the number of people you want per meal as well as the number of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and sweets servings you receive in each box.

What’s really cool is that the recipes are basic. They’ll generally call for 3-6 ingredients and can be tossed together in 10 minutes or so. You can add items like extra proteins, fresh fruit, grains, dips, bread, sauces, and more. Hungryroot has done a great job of organizing the pantry. So you can sort items according to your preferences (for example, select only plant-based proteins, or search for just fruit options).

Once you’ve added the quantities of each that you want, you can complete your order by adding delivery and payment information. After that, you can customize your box more, selecting recipes you like and snacks or sweets you want to include.

Finally, your Hungryroot will arrive according to the delivery date chosen. There’s a large delivery window (roughly 12 hours), but you don’t have to be home to receive your order. And Hungryroot delivery supplies are 100% recyclable, as mentioned.

Pricing

How much you pay for your Hungryroot box will depend on your subscription option and the additional groceries you want to add to your box. So prices can vary significantly. One thing I don’t love is that the starting price is $60. Now this gives you a lot of food, six meals to be exact, but it would be better if Hungryroot had a smaller plan option for beginners who just want to test out the service or just enjoy this type of thing periodically.

You can add or subtract grocery extras to your box as you see fit. Hungryroot also has a recurring promotion that offers new customers 40% off their first order of $99 or more and a freebie with their orders. The gift is a choice of almond chickpea cookie dough, fresh vegetable assortments, or protein packs. What’s cool about this promotion is that you receive a free gift with every order you place (not just the initial one). The 40% is only for the first order.
