What’s Unique About Boxed?

  • Bulk ordering

The biggest selling point for Boxed is that you can order in bulk. This is beneficial for two reasons. For one thing, bulk orders ensure that you don’t run out of your household essentials simply because you forgot to order them. What’s more, when you order in bulk, Boxed gives you bigger savings. So you save money and headaches at the same time.

  • Boxed for businesses

Continuing on the bulk ordering theme, Boxed has a separate account for businesses. You’ll want to take advantage of it for perks like a consumer-like buying experience, convenient multi-user accounts, flexible payment solutions, and tax emotions on purchases.

  • Express shipping

Boxed also has a convenient express delivery option for fresh foods like produce, meats, and other perishable items. This is a godsend for those who can’t make it to the supermarket and want fresh foods.

  • Cash rewards program

Boxed has a unique rewards program that premium members can enjoy. Called Boxed Up, the premium plan entitles you to 2% cashback on all orders. You can keep tabs on your rewards earnings on your accounts page and apply the cash rewards whenever you check out.

  • Autosave subscriptions

If you order the same items regularly, you can take advantage of subscription deliveries. Not only does this ensure that you will have the regular items you need on a constant basis without having to place the order or worry about running out, but autosave subscriptions also give you 5% off each order you receive. And for first-time autosavers, you’ll get 10% off your first order. For items you’re ordering regularly anyway, this is a hefty saving.

Truth be told, most online grocery store delivery services have similar offerings as well. What’s more, the majority of the competition offers additional services such as same-day delivery, multi-store shopping, or live updates during the personal shopping experience.

One thing from this company that impressed me was the mobile app. Boxed has a mobile app for both Android and iOS devices. The app is clean and easy to use. So it takes an already convenient service and makes it that much better by allowing you to shop from your phone. Well done, Boxed.

How It Works

Shopping with Boxed is very simple, big points for pleasant user experience and interface. Here’s a basic rundown of how it works:

  • Visit Boxed.com and sign up for an account

This only takes a second. You just need to put in an email address and choose a password.

  • Go shopping

You can browse the site independently or take advantage of the convenient aisles and filters. For example, aisles like personal care, snacks, beverages, and health and wellness help you narrow down your selections more easily. Honestly, Boxed doesn’t have the greatest categorization. For example, under the grocery section, I would prefer to see the various aisles listed clearly (produce, grains, beverages, deli, etc.). You can get there eventually, but you have to dig to find this type of categorization, making it a less pleasant user experience.

But Boxed does do a great job of managing your favorite items, highlighting deals, and even showcasing free samples when applicable. So if you’re looking to save, Boxed certainly features highly.

Boxed also lets you shop by preference. So if you're looking for all-organic products, vegan-friendly foods, gluten-free items, etc., you can use these smart filters to quickly weed out the unwanted products from the results.

  • Place your order

Once you’ve placed all the items you want in your cart, it’s time to check out. If this is your first order, you’ll need to enter your shipping information and billing details. Meanwhile, at this stage, Boxed will also recommend other hot items you can purchase for discounted prices. Add these to your cart or complete the transaction.

  • Wait for your groceries to arrive

That’s all the hard work. The next step is for Boxed to take care of. The service will hand-pick and pack your groceries as per your order. If any items are not available, you’ll be notified and won’t be charged for them.

Boxed sends you a confirmation message when your order is received and then again when the shipment goes out. Delivers typically take 1-3 days to arrive. Boxed ships to all 48 continental states.

Pricing

Boxed has straightforward pricing; I like that. You can get a free account and enjoy plenty of savings. Freemium users can even get free shipping on orders over $49. If you want to get more perks, you can upgrade your account to the Boxed Up level. This option costs you an annual premium. But for your buck, you’ll get more exclusive discounts, cashback rewards on every order, and a lowered free shipping tier. Here’s a glance at the membership options.

As you can see, regular members enjoy Boxed for free. Meanwhile, premium members will pay $49 a year ($39 for the first year). With that subscription, you’ll get free shipping on orders over $19.98 and get personalized discounts and coupons. You’ll also get the 2% cash rewards discussed earlier.

As mentioned, Boxed offers an express shipping option for fresh produce, frozen goods, dairy items, deli meats, and other perishable items. These items come with a freshness guarantee, and you can schedule the delivery to fit your timetable. Boxed shoppers can return their Express bags for store credit. You’ll earn $1 for every bag returned, and those credits can be applied to your next shopping cart.

Bottom Line

Boxed is a good, straightforward online grocery delivery service. While it doesn’t have much in the way of frills, Boxed definitely provides a high-quality, dependable service that gets the job done. If you’re looking for a more convenient way of getting your grocery shopping done, Boxed is a great choice.
