Our Verdict

Is Upward Worth Signing Up For?

Upward is best for individuals who wish to date exclusively within the Christian community. Upward offers the basic, free membership, which is enough to meet people and potentially date. The other two membership levels are premium and elite. Upward verifies all accounts with a phone number to minimize fake accounts. Most members are commitment-minded, so this is the app for you if looking for a long-term relationship or marriage.

TOTAL SCAM!
TOTAL SCAM!! You will get zero likes and zero views even after paying for the platinum subscription. I even sent 15 messages out to random people and received zero responses. Paid 40 bucks for 1 month and was off the site in 1 week. They kept my money. SCAM!!!

How Upward Works

Signup Process

The signup process requires that you use your phone number, verify it, provide your data, and fill out the “about me” portion, as well as a faith summary (optional). Because your profile is the primary communication tool with potential matches, make sure to do a good job. Next, go into your settings and filter out your matches by distance and age. The primary audience is Christians in their mid-20s into 30s who are looking for love.

The key is honesty as to why you are looking. If you are open to a long-term commitment that leads to marriage, this is the app for you.

As with many other apps, mutual likes result in a match and the ability to send messages. The free version will not allow you to see who liked you until you match them. Upward offers Super Likesthat notify a potential mate that you are interested.

The profile selection for your potential matches is a result of a computer algorithm, your search preferences, and likes. Once two mutual likes result in a match, you are welcome to start chatting. You can filter out your search preferences by faith and other, more typical, criteria.

Main Features include:

  • Unlimited likes (about 60 likes per day in the free version before you are locked out)
  • Five Super Likes per day (one Super Like daily in the free version)
  • Rewind on a profile (premium and elite feature)
  • No advertising (premium and elite feature)
  • One (30-minute) monthly boost of your profile (premium and elite feature)
  • Seeing who liked your profile (elite feature)
  • Religion-focused bios
  • Search capacity filtered by denomination
  • Strong emphasis on commitment
  • Intuitive (Upwards’ interface is similar to Tinder or Bumble in that it's intuitive and familiar to many)

In all versions of the app, messages are unlimited between matches. The free version is more than sufficient to match and potentially date.

Safety & Security

As with most apps, exercising sound judgment is the key. Self-protective measures include:

  • Not sending money
  • Not sharing personal information
  • Keeping all communication on the app
  • Not chatting with people that are unwilling to make video calls or prove who they are

Although some members do not play by Upward's rules, the developers urge you to block or report the offenders. You can read Upward’s safety policy on its website.

Bottom Line

The dating app world is loud with complaints, and not the least among them is the hook-up culture and lack of effort. Long gone are the days you swiped right due to the profile of a cute dog. Upward aims to solve this problem with an app aimed at the man or woman looking for a values or religion-based commitment.

Terrible experience. Threaten. The worse verification and customer service experience I’ve ever had. Completely soul-less responses.
I’m very much an introvert, and because of my work travels, I rarely have time to connect with people face to face. So dating apps have been really helpful for meeting new people and building connections — not just for dating, but for making new friends too. The only major downside for me is that I’ve been wanting to connect more with other Christians. So, a few days ago, I decided to download Upward since it was being advertised as a Christian dating app. I downloaded it, filled out my profile, and did some swiping. After a few hours, I noticed I wasn’t getting any likes, which is unusual for me. I say that not out of pride but honesty — I know I’m attractive. So, I decided to submit the photo verification. Keep in mind, it was bedtime, and obviously, I didn’t have makeup on or my hair styled like in my photos, lol. I submitted the verification, and it was rejected. I figured maybe it was a glitch. I actually prefer to do my verifications early on dating apps so people can feel reassured that I’m a real person — not a bot, lol. So, I tried submitting the verification again. But this time, they locked me out of my account. It was strange because it didn’t say I’d been banned. It just asked me to contact customer care, which I did. But the customer service was cold and soulless. They didn’t explain anything about why I couldn’t log in — they just sent me a link to appeal my ban. That’s actually how I found out I had been banned. No explanation. When I asked for more details, they threatened me. Truly soulless behavior. Out of all the secular dating apps I’ve tried, this was by far the worst experience — and it’s supposed to be a Christian dating app. There’s another Christian app I’ve had for nearly three years, and I’ve never had any problems with it. I even had an issue once on one of the major secular platforms, and when I contacted their customer support, they were incredibly helpful and resolved the issue right away. I’ve had great customer service and fast verification processes on those apps — never any issues. Until Upward. I was only on the app for less than 24 hours. Lucky for them, I’ll be making a video about my experience, since I have a Christian following on my social media platforms. They need to be called out for their cold, soulless customer service — especially considering I submitted my verification voluntarily, only to be rejected twice. And I had no likes or no matches within the time I was on it. It’s honestly disheartening how they responded to me and also threaten me, telling me they will ignore and dismiss my appeal just because I asked them why I was banned. I am so embarrassed this is a “Christian” dating apps because the secular ones are doing better. I thank God other Christian apps like the one that starts with S. I should have never tried upward.
