Thriveworks has been the best source of therapy I have ever had. I initially had a great therapist I was able to talk to, which is actually part of my issue, talking. I decided to stop therapy but realized that I needed some more. I initially was doing remote and decided to do in person instead. I thought if they had one great therapist that they might have more. I was right. My second therapist was also very effective. If it wasn't for my two therapist, I don't know how I'd be doing. Actually I do, definitely not as good. I highly recommend Thriveworks and much thanks to Anna Settle and Todd Newman. Btw, bad reviews may be based on people in distress. It's easy to say bad things, it's really hard to get to the point of saying good things.

Thriveworks bad business practices
I logged in to write a review of Thriveworks and was amazed to read another review that captured almost word for word my sentiments. Therapist is awesome, company is terrible. My teenage daughter's appointments were cancelled without warning, and when I immediately called to get support, it was an off-shore call center, and the agent knew nothing and could do nothing. Even though the billing issue was resolved and they actually had access to my credit card the whole time, they refused to put my daughter's appointment back on the schedule, citing some 48 hour company policy. Agent refused to allow me to speak to any other person, saying they were "all in meetings." She was entirely unhelpful and unfriendly. Very frustrating and saddening, as this company is in the business of mental health. I had another experience previously when my daughter had strep throat, and I called to cancel AT LEAST 24 hours in advance, but they have a hard line, non-negotiable 72 hour cancellation policy, so they charged me a ridiculous fee to cancel.

I'm giving them 2 stars because the therapist is good but the company is terrible. But now, the therapist has stopped my appointments over billing issues. There is no one to contact about these issues except some customer service foreigners who don't know diddly and do squat. The insurance company got it wrong too so they're not alone and I'm the one in the middle and losing out. Do not reply to me with a copy and paste rote answer.

Overview

Thriveworks interviews and hires less than 4% of all clinical applicants, to ensure a working environment where they, and their patients, can flourish—so you know you’re in good hands.

All mental health professionals are fully qualified and/or licensed. Licensed practitioners are asked to disclose any involvement in investigations, complaints, or criminal/civil procedures, and Master’s-level clinicians and therapists are required to agree to a background check.

Thriveworks Specialties and Areas of Expertise

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Anger management
  • Relationships
  • Trauma
  • Career
  • Addiction
  • Grief

Most clinics also offer specialist services such as:

  • Child and adolescent therapy
  • Couples therapy
  • Christian counseling
  • LGBTQ+ counseling
  • Psychiatry

A major differentiating factor between Thriveworks and other brands is that nearly all locations are owned by Thriveworks, and are not franchise-owned.  So the specific expertise of therapists in each area can differ based on the clinic you are using. For example, some clinics state they offer career counseling or family therapy services whereas, in other offices, therapists may specialize in fields like addiction or life coaching.

All Thriveworks locations offer counseling by phone or video, sessions up to 60 minutes, and have flexible scheduling including nights and weekend appointments, and flexibility for cancellations. Thriveworks is also able to provide same or next-day sessions, compared to the 3 week average wait time for mental health care.

Types of Sessions Available With Thriveworks

  • Online (virtual conference)
  • Phonecall
  • Face-to-face (not psychiatric services)

How Thriveworks Works

What sets Thriveworks apart is its dedication to customer service and the option to select virtual or in-person sessions.

Shocked by the difficulty of accessing therapy in the US, Dr. Anthony Centore, Thriveworks’ Founder, set out on a mission to provide high-quality therapy with first-grade customer service to match. You can expect an easy and efficient booking experience from the start.

Thriveworks also takes a holistic approach to therapy. The enrollment model used, although incurring an extra cost, enables Thriveworks to offer a truly comprehensive therapeutic experience. Enrollment grants you access to invaluable sources of information, support, and advice in between sessions that could ultimately enhance your therapy.

Scheduling live chats/video chats

If you want to start therapy ASAP, you’re in luck. Thriveworks therapy sessions can usually be arranged within 24 hours, and if you’ve ever sat on a therapy waiting list, you’ll know that’s very speedy.

To book an appointment, you can use the super-simple online booking system or call the office nearest to you. Offices are normally open from 7.30 am to 9 pm, Monday to Friday, but this varies. Offices are open on weekends too but may close earlier in the day. Check your local office webpage for exact opening hours.

Thriveworks Customer Support

Thriveworks offers efficient centralized booking services, saving you the hassle of tracking down a busy therapist to sort out your appointments.

The company hires HIPAA-compliant medical receptionists, and all calls are answered in less than a minute. The contact center has online chat and queue callback functions, too, making it that much easier for you to speak to someone.

Thriveworks Pricing

You’ll be pleased to know that many Thriveworks therapists are connected with major insurance policies, for example, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Optum, and United Healthcare. They are also unique in that they accept Medicare. When booking online, you can see which therapists in your area accept insurance plans.

Thriveworks’ pricing can be broken down into session and enrollment costs:

Session cost

The cost of a therapy session varies between clinics, and the pricing brackets with or without insurance are provided below. Regardless of your insurance coverage status, Thriveworks aims to provide the highest quality services at reasonable rates.

Per Session

With insurance

$10-$40

Without insurance

$65-$140

You can explore prices for individual therapists on the web pages for each local office—everything is very transparent. You can cancel a session up to 23.5 hours beforehand, but like most counseling practices, if you don’t show or fail to cancel in time, you will be charged.

Enrollment fees

If affordability is high on your list of requirements, it’s worth noting that Thriveworks has an enrollment-based model of pricing. So each month, you might pay a fee to receive additional benefits that insurance doesn’t cover. If you sign up for enrollment, you can cancel any time.

For many people, the enrollment benefits are well worth the additional cost. These include flexible email and phone advice between sessions, flexible appointment options including evenings and weekends, and a 24 hour 'Ask a Coach' Q&A. They also work directly with insurance companies so clients don't have to submit a claim.

Enrollment fees vary depending on where you are. Thriveworks states on its website that enrollment is usually $99 for the first month and then $10 a month ongoing.

Browsing through the different local offices, you’ll see a $39/month enrollment fee is very common. In some places, like Las Vegas, there is no cost for enrollment. Whereas in Philadelphia, you pay $99 the first month, then $29 a month thereafter—a bit of a geographical lucky dip!

Bottom Line

Thriveworks is a trustworthy provider that’s worth considering for those seeking high-quality therapy both online and in person. Therapy can be a costly investment, both in time and money, and it’s important you find the right fit - Thriveworks understands the importance, and will work to ensure complete satisfaction.

Thriveworks is highly selective in the professionals it hires while working to ensure that all patients can book appointments significantly faster than the industry average, so you can get the support you need to tackle a variety of issues. Although the enrollment fee adds extra cost (which varies by location), the benefits you get, such as between-session advice, meaningfully add to one’s mental health and wellbeing journey.

Customer service is clearly a number one priority with Thriveworks, and it’s reassuring to know you can speak to someone any day of the week if you have questions. If you’re ready to start therapy right now, chances are you could be on the books for an appointment in the next 24 hours.

Don’t trust the billing dept!!
While I like both therapists I’ve had here (I only switched bc the first went on maternity leave) but the billing department does not know what they’re doing. They make you put a card on file for the monthly membership fee of ~$39. Then they’re supposed to pull money from your account weekly based on your deductible and out-of-pocket limits. I was dumb to assume that I’d hit my deductible when the payments stopped. Well to my surprise they pulled $2276 from my account all in one go after I paid a small $19 fee they charged. The money was pulled on 10/25/23 for appointments I’d had back in March 2023. No one knows why, they can’t refund me everything and to put me on a payment plan (something I wasn’t aware of) I need to give more money. The refund of course won’t go through for 10 days so I have no money in my account until then but they don’t care. Now I was told I had until Wednesday to give the first payment but no that’s a lie as they pulled it today 10/30/23. I’m now deeper in the negative and am done with this place once this payment plan is paid off. NOT TRUSTWORTHY AT ALL. I’m warning you now
