Stony Brook Tech Bootcamps in a Nutshell

Overview

Stony Brook University, in partnership with online bootcamp provider Springboard, offers tech bootcamps in five high-demand professional areas, including software engineering, data science, data analytics, UI/UX design, and cybersecurity.

Stony Brook offers multiple start dates throughout the year. Programs can take six or nine months to complete if you spend 15 to 20 hours per week, but since they’re asynchronous, you can take them at your own pace. Classes are taken entirely online. The curriculum is based around specific projects with the goal of helping students build a portfolio that will help them find a job in the area of study after earning their certificate.

Stony Brook University is a public university founded in the state of New York in 1957. In 2023, in partnership with Springboard, it began offering online tech bootcamps.
Stony Brook provides tech bootcamps in five different areas of study:

How Stony Brook’s Online Degree Programs Work

The tech bootcamps offered by Stony Brook allow working professionals to advance their careers without having to put their personal or professional lives on hold. Each bootcamp curriculum is delivered through a fully online platform that helps participants track their progress easily.

How to apply to Stony Brook University

The first step is to complete an application. If your application meets the bootcamp’s criteria, you’ll have a phone interview with an enrollment advisor. Then you have to complete a brief knowledge gap survey, which takes about half an hour.

If you’re accepted into the program, you’ll have 24 hours to register. You can choose your start date and payment plan. Stony Brook admits candidates to their tech bootcamps on a rolling basis. 

Prerequisites

Students need to be at least 18 years old and fluent in English in order to enroll. In addition, some bootcamps have specific prerequisites for admission:

• Software engineering: No coding experience is required, but if you already have basic skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, you may be able to take the accelerated Core version of the curriculum.

• Data analytics: Two years of professional work experience working regularly with office, design or programming tools are required.

• Data science: Proficiency in math and statistics is required. 

Cost

Stony Brook’s tech bootcamps can be paid upfront, which includes a discount, or in monthly payments 

• Software engineering: $9,900 or six payments of $1,890 ($11,340)

• Cybersecurity: $10,900 or four payments of $3,700 ($14,800)

• Data analytics: $8,900 or six payments of $1,690 ($10,140)

• Data science: $10,400 or five payments of $2,650 ($13,250)

• UI/UX design: $10,400 or five payments of $2,960 ($14,800)

In addition, Stony Brook offers climb credit loans and scholarships to those who qualify

• Climb credit loans: Loan terms of 12 to 42 months are available as well as 0% APR options. You have to pay a deposit at the time of enrollment.

• Scholarships: $750 for women in tech and $750 for veterans and active military options are available.

However, Coding Dojo’s full-time courses are only 16 weeks, which are significantly shorter than Stony Brook’s, which can take six to nine months depending on the program. In addition, Coding Dojo’s tuition ($9,995-$16,995) is on average a bit higher than Stony Brook’s  ($8,900 - $14,800), depending on the program and payment plan you choose.

Stony Brook vs DeVry University

DeVry offers entry-level tech course certificates that are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and include transferable credits. DeVry offers a variety of tech programs, including cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT), which can take eight to 16 months. Stony Brook is also an academic accredited institution that offers tech bootcamps in five main areas, including cybersecurity, data analytics and software engineering. Its programs are significantly shorter than DeVry’s, ranging between six and nine months.
