Wave Broadband Review 2021

Richard Sutherland Author image

In a Nutshell

Wave Broadband offers competitively priced cable and fiber internet to Washington, Oregon, and California homes and businesses. Download speeds are average, but the upload speeds are particularly slow, limiting Wave Broadband’s appeal to power users. Most plans have tight data caps, too, after the introductory offers expire. Add relatively poor customer service into the mix, and Wave Broadband is a hard sell where better options exist.

pros

  • Unlimited data on some plans
  • No contracts
  • 24/7 US-based customer support

cons

  • Tight data caps on economy plans
  • Poor upload speeds

What Services and Features Does Wave Broadband Offer?

Wave Broadband offers high-speed internet services for homes and businesses in Washington, Oregon, and California. Besides cable internet, Wave provides TV and home phone packages. The TV packages are supplied by TiVo and TiVo Stream 4K.

Wave Broadband also offers whole-home Wi-Fi installation powered by Eero access points. You can even rent wireless home sound systems from Wave to complement your streaming services.

Prices, Plans, and Value for Money

Wave Broadband has three internet plans in most locations. Some locations may be offered a slower 50Mbps package. While there are no contracts, you have the option of choosing between 6-month, 12-month, or 24-month promotions. Promotions often include free installation and unlimited data for the length of the term.

TV and phone plans can be added to your order, as can whole-home audio systems and security systems.

Ease of Use, Hardware and Setup

You can use your own modem and Wi-Fi router or rent basic hardware from Wave for $15-$18/month.

Another option is choosing Wave’s Enhanced Whole Home Wi-Fi, which creates a mesh wireless network in your home using multiple Wi-Fi access points as needed. This starts at $29.95/month.

Installation is listed as $79.95, but it’s typically available for free as a special offer when you choose a Wave Broadband plan. Installation performed by Wave’s technicians takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Wave Broadband Security

Considering the long list of additional options you can rent from Wave, including smart home add-ons, home audio, digital video recorders, and gaming routers, it’s a surprise that no security software at all is available from Wave Broadband.

On the other hand, you can rent a smart home system with door, window, motion, flood, carbon, and smoke sensors from Wave. So, Wave can at least help secure your home physically, even if you need to look elsewhere for software to secure your web browsing.

Wave Broadband Performance

Wave Internet’s speeds are relatively slow compared to its competitors in Washington, Oregon, and California. Particularly poor are the upload speeds. Even if you pay for the most expensive plan, your upload rate is still limited to 10Mbps.

On cheaper plans, you can double your data allocation for an additional $15/month. Unlimited data is available on faster cable plans for $25/month, but your internet speed can be throttled once you use 2TB per month.

Wave Broadband Customer Service

Wave Broadband doesn’t offer live chat. You can call Wave Broadband for support via phone on the toll-free number, available 24/7. Customer service is US-based, but despite this, users often complain about poor customer support.

Wave also has 25 local retail stores in Oregon, Washington, and California. Here, you can discuss services, pick up and return equipment, and make payments.

Wave Broadband has an online knowledge base and a user guide, but they’re not particularly well arranged, and much of the data hasn’t been updated since 2014. Troubleshooting articles lack detail.

FAQ

Bottom Line

Wave Broadband initially appears to be a solid ISP choice thanks to its competitive pricing, range of hardware options, and unlimited data on fiber plans.

But it’s certainly not for everyone. All plans have very slow upload rates, which could frustrate gamers or streamers. Data caps on most plans are particularly tight, too, often requiring you to get a data upgrade at an additional cost.

Wave offers a long list of rental equipment tangential to its internet service but doesn’t include more useful options like antivirus or firewall software. And despite Wave’s US-based customer support, customers still have many complaints about service.

Overall, Wave has some improvement to do before it can be considered a top ISP pick.
