Above and Beyond — Exceptional Support from DreamHost
After a long day of trying to migrate a WordPress site from GoDaddy to DreamHost — including a failed plugin migration, tangled databases, and hours of back-and-forth troubleshooting — I reached DreamHost support late in the evening. Within minutes, I was connected with CES G., who not only understood the problem quickly but also took it upon himself to dig deeper. He discovered that part of the site was coded in a way that interfered with the migration, and instead of passing me off or offering vague advice, he personally resolved the issue. Within half an hour, the site was fully up and running on DreamHost servers. Professional, patient, and proactive — exactly what great support should be. CES G. turned a frustrating, exhausting day into a reminder of what true customer service looks like. Five stars, no question.

Support got on my problem and stuck with me until resolved.
Had a problem where my WordPress site had been locked out by Jetpack due to their finding that my login had been exposed on the dark web. I was unable to reset the password through normal means. Support provided the step-by-step instructions to reset via WordPress's control panel, which worked fine. They were responsive and easy to work with, not some AI like so many sites!

Ideal For

DreamHost is a great choice for any website owner that needs a hosting provider that provides a broad variety of hosting types which can scale with the business. DreamHost’s solutions are suitable for rookie website builders who need a builder type environment. And they scale to cloud hosting which can support large enterprise applications. DreamHost is a versatile provider with very affordable shared hosting packages. Many customers can benefit from its hosting.

How DreamHost Works

Hosting Types

DreamHost offers virtually the full array of hosting options available. These include:

  • Wordpress hosting. DreamHost offers shared, VPS, and dedicated managed hosting plans that are optimized for the needs of Wordpress webmasters. DreamPress is a more powerful Wordpress hosting option that also supports staging environments, backups, and which includes caching features.

  • Shared hosting: Regular shared hosting packages are not specifically optimized for Wordpress sites but can also be used for them. Like Wordpress hosting, these plans are managed. This means that users don’t need to worry about keeping the server secure and properly updated.

  • VPS hosting. Virtual private server (VPS) hosting is a step up from shared hosting and gives customers access to virtualized chunks of hardware.

  • Dedicated. DreamHost supports dedicated (bare metal) hosting whereby users gain access to a physical machine.

  • Cloud hosting: Cloud hosting makes it easy for users to scale resources as required. These fluid plans are provisioned on elastic infrastructure so it can scale up, or scale down, as customers’ needs change.

Uptime and Performance

Think that every hosting company offers the same 99.99% guarantee? So did we until we saw that DreamHost actually offers a 100% uptime guarantee. This means exactly what it sounds like: customers will be compensated for any downtime whatsoever. The terms of service state that the guarantee doesn’t just include the web server: if FTP, SSH or webmail access is compromised then users are also entitled to payback. The exceptions are scheduled maintenance or downtime caused by customer error.

How do DreamHost’s server speeds compare to the competition? Most of the infrastructure that powers DreamHost’s hosting options is based in the US. Additionally, DreamHost is a relative veteran of the hosting industry, having been in business since the mid 90s. All this translates to excellent speeds. When measured for initial response time, fully loaded time, and time under load, DreamHost has consistently returned excellent benchmarks.

Website Builder Features

DreamHost does offer a drag and drop builder product for Wordpress that is designed to make deploying Wordpress-based sites even easier. The company offers a series of Wordpress and Wordpress Builder plans that are designed for this purpose.Using WP Site Builder, users are able to avail of drag-and-drop plugins on top of Wordpress that simplifies the process of achieving desirable visual layouts. There’s also a library of more than 200 industry specific themes to choose from to get the right look and feel. Finally, the Site Builder provides real time SEO recommendations to help users make the right edits to rank highly in search engines.

Email

All DreamHost hosting packages include the ability to leverage email servers in order to host emails. For shared and Wordpress hosting plans, this feature can be accessed in the conventional way (via DreamHost’s custom management panel).

For organizations that exchange a lot of email, and which want to take things further, DreamHost also offers an email hosting add-on. This allows users to avail of a massive 25GB storage capacity per inbox. There’s also an ad-free webmail client, spam and phishing filters, and mobile and desktop sync. The early plan costs just $1.67 per mailbox per month

Control Panel

Instead of offering clients cPanel to manage their websites, DreamHost has actually developed its own panel interface for managing sites. The panel can be accessed from an easy to remember login (panel.DreamHost.com). However, although DreamHost has gone to lengths to make their panel more user friendly than cPanel, it does contain most of its features. The only negative is that, because it’s not true cPanel, users can’t restore cPanel backups from other hosting providers. Instead, in-migrations need to be undertaken manually using FTP and the built-in tools for importing databases. DreamHost does not provide support with migrations. This custom panel is available for shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting customers.

DreamHost Customer Support

Users that run into difficulty have a lot of support options to choose from. Firstly, using the live chat window, they can speak to a bot that can quickly pass on queries to a live human. We found this system to be quick and responsive. If that doesn’t work out, then human support is available 24/7. There’s also a knowledge base packed with how-tos and troubleshooting guides, a system status dashboard, and tech support by ticket.

DreamHost Pricing

Pricing & Special Offers

Dreamhost offers a variety of hosting packages at different price points. For instance, while basic shared hosting can be purchased for less than $3 per month, dedicated /bare metal hosting costs more than $100.

Bottom Line

Dreamhost offers a wide variety of hosting types from cloud hosting through to Wordpress hosting. It has rolled out its own version of cPanel for ease of administration, although the company doesn’t help out with migrations. Speeds are good and prices are very competitive for users that sign up for 3 years periods.

Dreamhost is the best price and performance but their ECWID E-commerce plugin can be tricky
I have had a shared hosting site with Dreamhost for appreciately 30 days now and would like to report the following based on my experiences with running my website within the Dreamhost system. I have still relatively a newby at least with handling a WordPress based website, used square online which wasn't WordPress based and had much reduced capabilities. 1. They have the best shared hosting pricing and service for a 4 yr term or hosting plan. That includes their initial setup of you website if you request it. 2. They follow up with your concerns within 24 hours in most cases. If there are changes that are required with Plugin's they have installed in the initial site setup after it's released to you, You have to make them with some directions and resource documents that they send to you. So you should be ready to learn, in my case WordPress and manipulation of Plugins. 3. At times this can be frustrating because not everything they suggest resolves your problems or works the first time. Also each response to your support tickets are normally handled by different support technicians unless it's elevated to a supervisor or manager level due to the complexity of the problem or unresolved issue. 4. The only caution I would advise those considering Dreamhost hosting service is centered on whether you need an E-commerce Store, which I do. They utilize ECWID Lightspeed plugin as their E-commerce as it's relatively simple to setup compared to Woo Commerce and all it's related plugin's. Of course the capabilities of ECWID is not as advanced as Woo Commerce. I used Woo Commerce for my square online store in my last website as really felt it was seamless but that was square strong point. I will have to report for me, ECWID Lightspeed has been frustrating to utilize mainly because for my website, they is a programing glitch that doesn't allow me to access my Store dashboard to make product items or store changes. To make changes to my Store, I have to login direct to my ECWID Lightspeed account and use their site interface as their dashboard will not run within the Dreamhost WordPress user interface. Like I stated this is a programing problem that neither Dreamhost or ECWID support has been able to solve for several weeks now. So I must make Store changes specifically with my sale item listed including pricing and shipping within the ECWID interface and then hope that the ECWID plugin within my Dreamhost WordPress picks up the changes . So far I have not had any problems with this happening. So I have rated Dreamhost high regardless of this current unresolved issue as right now , their management is reviewing this issue. The ECWID dashboard issue mentioned also retards the speed at which my store page opens when a customer accesses my site . I have run speed tests on my site with various utilities and they all state that their are issues with my Store page or Ecommerce opening , 10-15 seconds after clicking compared to my other pages. I would say that after it has opened once, my browser cache will refresh all pages quickly. This problem is also under investigation. I have tested this on newly built Ryzen 7 desktop PCs with the same results and running a high speed recently updated 5ghz router via a local service. 5. My last caution is also related to my ECWID Lightspeed plugin. If you are looking at linking your site to a variety of sale channels like Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok etc, ECWID plugin does support this but you must upgrade your Ecommerce plan which is 10- 12x the cost of my Dreamhost hosting plan makes services like Shopify look cost competitive. I could not afford this. So I am pleased with Dreamhost shared hosting regardless of problems with their E-commerce partner, ECWID Lightspeed and my programing glitch mentioned may be limited to my situation and you may not run into the same problem. I am amazed that this problem so far has not been able to be solved, it should not be that complex but apparently it is ie now involving Dreamhost management to research the problem. Again in my previous experience with Woo Commerce, it was seamless . ECWID Lightspeed trust pilot reviews are mixed , look on this site from a cost and performance standpoint. I am waiting to see whether my ECWID problems are resolved before I issue a separate review for them on this site.
