In a Nutshell

LegalZoom provides a variety of legal services, including self-service online divorce document creation. It doesn’t specialize in online divorce, as some of its competitors do, and it’s pricing is on the expensive side, but the platform is well designed, with a simple and straightforward questionnaire.

pros

  • Simple questionnaire
  • Well-known legal documents brand
  • Features affordable attorney network

cons

  • A bit on the pricey side
  • Doesn’t specialize in online divorce

What Does Legal Zoom Provide?

LegalZoom provides a wide range of legal services, including divorce documents for uncontested divorces. Because this service fits into the wider LegalZoom ecosystem, it is a little less thorough, in terms of supporting documentation and services, than some competitors.

It does benefit, however, from LegalZoom’s extensive experience in the domain of self-service legal documents. The user interface and experience is streamlined and straight-forward, and you have phone and email help available from LegalZoom’s specialists as needed, plus access to legal advice from LegalZoom’s nationwide attorney network (costs extra).

How Does Getting an Online Divorce with Legal Zoom Work?

As we’ve already mentioned, the divorce section of LegalZoom is more barebones than both some competitors and many of the company’s other services. In terms of filling out the questionnaire, however, this has translated well into a simple questionnaire process.

You start by selecting your state and then answering 3 questions to verify your eligibility. In reality, these 3 questions don’t determine whether you can proceed with creating your documents or not. Like most online divorce websites, they are somewhat superfluous, except to display a disclaimer stating that, although you and your spouse may not currently be in agreement, you will need to be before filing your paperwork.

The disclaimer promises to walk spouses through all the important issues in a divorce to come to terms. This is technically true, in that the divorce documents themselves speak to important issues like childcare and alimony. However, once again, there are few resources made available to users. Others have done a better job providing guides and help documents for navigating such delicate questions.

You will answer a few basic questions first, then be asked to pay, and then you can provide more information on, for example, shared assets and debts, before finalizing and downloading your documents.

Pricing for Online Divorce

LegalZoom offers online divorce document creation at $499. This makes it one of the more expensive online divorce platforms we’ve reviewed, with most companies offering such services at around the $250 mark or less. The price includes downloading your documents and filing instructions, plus help from (non-attorney) specialists if needed.

If you have other legal documents to create—business or otherwise—you may feel more comfortable using the same platform, in which case the cost may be justified.

Additionally, LegalZoom’s attorney network can put you in touch with an attorney at a reasonable price. If you feel like you’ll need to speak to an attorney, factoring this into the cost can help balance things out.

Legal Zoom Background

LegalZoom was founded at the turn of the century, and has built up a network of independent attorneys in all 50 states to help individuals navigate the often obscure world of legal documentation. According to its website, LegalZoom has helped over 4 million customers with their personal and business legal needs.

This is certainly impressive, but should be considered in light of the company’s mixed online reviews. LegalZoom.com has a TrustPilot rating of just 1.9 out of 5, which is definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. The company’s UK site, LegalZoom.co.uk, does decidedly better, with 4.5 out of 5 stars. The LegalZoom.com website also showcases 15000+ verified reviews that are mostly positive, with an average score of 4.6.

The company has also managed to maintain an A+ rating with the BBB, with 491 complaints filed and closed in the last 3 years. To us, this says that LegalZoom does a decent job of responding to grievances. Its BBB Customer Review rating, however, sits at 2.24 out of 5.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the vast majority of negative reviews don’t relate to the online divorce section, but to business customers. Additionally, many of the recent BBB reviews are positive, which may indicate that efforts have been made (and successfully so) to address some of the recurring issues. LegalZoom has also taken the time to respond to customer complaints, and several customers have opted to give a higher note following intervention.

What Customers Say About Legal Zoom

“I had a very good experience with my agent. He was most helpful, very patient and very professional. My needs we met!” - Carol F., customer.

“We called Legalzoom on a Saturday. We were a little concerned that we might either get a customer service person who was overwhelmed due to working on a Saturday, or who was inexperienced and assigned to work on a Saturday. But, Legalzoom's agent-Eric C. quickly alleviated both of our concerns. Eric was patient, professorial and helpful in describing our next steps (both with Legalzoom & the government).” - Chris E., customer.

“I ordered a simple will and after receiving it I saw it needed a small revision. Should have been a small easy fix. But, it took several calls and follow ups to make it correct. I am still happy with the service, but they made a small revision a big deal. You have to be tenacious with due diligence or they will not follow up.” - Brian, customer.

Customer Service

Support is available by phone or email, from Monday to Friday, 5am to 7pm (PT) and weekends from 7am to 4pm (PT).

As previously mentioned, there is very limited documentation for the Online Divorce section of LegalZoom, which is a shame given how much time and effort has gone into some of their other services, like Estate Planning. In this case, there is no FAQ or knowledge base. If you need help, even for simple questions, you’ll need to contact LegalZoom directly.

Legal Zoom FAQs

Do I still need to file my papers myself?

Yes, you will need to download your documents and file for divorce yourself. Depending upon your state and country, there may be a fee. If your circumstances make it impossible to pay, you can submit a petition to have the filing fee waived.

Do I need a printer?

Yes. Unlike some competitors (who often charge for the service), LegalZoom only permits you to download your documents for printing. You’ll then need to sign them and file with the court.

Is LegalZoom available in all 50 states?

Yes. For divorce, estate planning, and most other services, LegalZoom operates nationwide. The company also has an “Independent Attorney Network,” with attorneys available in all 50 states to provide legal advice as needed.

Bottom Line

LegalZoom provides online divorce document creation that is simple and straightforward. It suffers from a poverty of supporting documentation and comes with a relatively high price tag, although its well-priced attorney network can help offset this cost. The company has mixed reviews online, although it seems highly reactive to complaints, and has an A+ rating with the BBB.
