What Petplan covers

While Petplan used to offer tiered plans, it has moved towards a model with one single, comprehensive policy, which you can then customize by choosing your level of reimbursement (70% 80% or 90%), deductible ($100-$2,500), and annual limit($2,500-unlimited).

Standard cover is comprehensive, and includes accidents and injuries, diagnostic treatment, surgery, rehab, non-routine dental treatment, cancer cover, and even prescription medications.

If you take out a policy with an annual limit of $15,000 or more, there are some additional benefits, including behavioral treatments, death from illness or injury, and even lost and found advertising and rewards.

Limits and Deductibles

Petplan is unique in that it’s one of the most customizable policies around. It lets you choose whether to apply the deductible annually or per condition. You can also choose your deductible, starting from as low as $100 up to $2,500. The deductible can be increased in $50 increments.

In addition, you can set your unlimited annual payout limit. This can be as low as $2,500 or completely unlimited coverage. Even better, there are no per condition limits or lifetime caps, which guarantees your furry friend’s care will be covered for the duration of an illness or injury, including chronic conditions like diabetes, allergies, cancers, KCS or dry eyes, etc.

Reimbursement is a straight 70%, 80% or 90% of your actual vet bills.

Value for Money

Petplan’s extensive coverage comes with higher price tag than some providers, but will give you peace of mind that your pet is covered for the best possible medical care.

It’s possible to insure a small, mixed breed cat for as low as $21.20 with an annual limit of $2,500, a $1,000 deductible and 70% reimbursement.

With a $15,000 annual limit, plus a $500 annual deductible and 90% reimbursement, the price becomes $51.16 a month.

While the price might be a bit high, you’re getting a lot of coverage and customization options. Also, the periodontal disease and bilateral condition coverage add a lot to these comprehensive policies.

You can get a lot of discounts that can knock off quite a reasonable chunk off your final bill. These include 5% off if you purchase your policy online 10% off if you’re military or ex-military and even 10% off if you offer pet insurance to your employees as a voluntary benefit.

Age Limits

Petplan insures all pets over 6 months old, with no upper limits. However, any pet over the age of 6 years will need to undergo a vet exam within 30 days of being insured.

The Fine Print: What Isn’t Covered?

Like some other insurers, pre-existing conditions are divided into 2 categories: those that will be covered after a waiting period, and those that are considered incurable. There is no set list of incurable conditions, but only examples of what might be considered incurable, which could make for some uncertainty. However, Petplan provides a free medical underwriting option and their customer service is open 24/7/365 to help you understand exactly how the policy works.

Dental treatment is covered, not only for dental injury but also for periodontal disease in all teeth. Routine treatments such as cleaning aren’t covered.

Routine wellness care also isn’t covered, but treatment for some conditions will be excluded unless you prove your pet had a routine exam by a veterinarian within 12 months prior to policy.

Of course, as a responsible pet owner you’ll want to get your pet checked at regular intervals, whether this is covered or not. However, with Petplan you run the risk of having an otherwise valid claim rejected if you miss a visit.

Petplan’s insurance policy has excellent standard cover and a lot of customization possibilities, which gives you a ton of flexibility. There are easy to qualify for discounts and you will be reimbursed by 70%, 80% or 90%, depending on your choice. You can also set your annual payout limit, with no per condition or lifetime limits for your pet. StaffJun. 18, 2019
